Expanding Our Horizons: Edwards Expands Cryogenic Technology Portfolio
NORTH AMERICA | 24 September 2025 | 5 min
In 2014, the film Interstellar captured imaginations by exploring time, space, and humanity’s search for survival beyond our solar system. In popular culture, we often times see cryogenic technology portrayed as a way to preserve people for long journeys, cryosleep pods that make deep space travel possible. While today’s advancements don’t quite extend into that realm of science fiction, cryogenic technology is already mission-critical in our world today.
Recently, we have expanded our portfolio with a new line of cryogenic products, with ECC Helium Compressors, E2CH Cold Heads, and ECP Cryogenic Pumps. These additions strengthen our ability to support customers in space simulation and research as well as industrial coating and processing, where reliable cooling and deep vacuum environments are essential to progress.
Meeting the Demands of Space Simulation and Research
Space exploration and advanced research rely on systems that can replicate extreme environments with absolute consistency. Our cryogenic solutions provide the deep vacuum performance required for satellite testing, propulsion development, and long-duration simulation. With pumping speeds of up to 10,000 l/s for N2 and 30,000 l/s for H2O as well as the ability to capture heavy gases such as krypton, xenon, and argon, these systems deliver the stability researchers depend on to carry out critical testing and experimentation.
Enabling Precision in Industrial Coating
Industrial coating applications demand repeatability and accuracy to achieve consistent results. Our cryogenic vacuum systems provide the stable, high vacuum levels required for thin-film coating processes used in optics, flat-panel displays, and advanced manufacturing. Designed for both batch and inline coating systems, our solutions help ensure coating quality while reducing energy consumption and extending maintenance intervals, delivering both performance and cost efficiency.
Our Cryogenic Technology
- ECC Helium Compressors – The driving force of cryogenic systems, delivering continuous, high-purity helium flow with advanced scroll technology and variable speed drives. Compact and efficient, they are designed for continuous operation and long service life in applications such as fusion energy systems and particle accelerators.
- E2CH Cold Heads – Offering precise and reliable cooling performance, these cold heads achieve ultra-low temperatures with minimal vibration and low maintenance requirements. They are well-suited to superconducting magnets, quantum computing, medical imaging, and other applications where stable low temperatures are critical.
- ECP Cryogenic Pumps – Engineered for high vacuum performance down to 10⁻⁶ mbar, these pumps deliver high pumping speeds and efficient heavy gas capture. With modular designs that simplify service, they provide dependable operation across space simulation, advanced coating, and materials research.
Integrated Cryogenic Solutions
Our products can be combined to create tailored solutions for customer needs. ECC compressors paired with E2CH cold heads form advanced cryogenic cooling systems, while ECC compressors integrated with ECP pumps create robust cryogenic vacuum systems. These solutions offer the flexibility and consistency required to support the most challenging applications in science and industry.
Supporting the Future of Science and Industry
With the addition of these cryogenic products, we are expanding our capabilities to meet the growing needs of customers working at the forefront of technology. Whether replicating the vacuum of space or delivering precision in advanced coating, Edwards Cryogenic Technology provides the performance and reliability required to drive innovation forward.
Smarter, More Connected Vacuum Measurement
In addition to advancing our cryogenic portfolio, we have also expanded our range of vacuum measurement tools. Our new P4 and P5 Handheld Vacuum Gauges give customers an easier, more connected way to monitor vacuum levels in real time.
Accuracy has always been essential in vacuum applications, and these handheld gauges were designed to make setup, spot checks, and maintenance straightforward. Both models feature a sleek design, large graphic display, and intuitive keypad for simple operation—but what truly sets them apart is Bluetooth® Low Energy connectivity. This allows data to be transferred and reviewed on the go, eliminating cables and enabling live performance tracking even in tight or hard-to-reach spaces.
- P4 Gauge – Uses a piezoresistive sensor for highly accurate absolute pressure readings up to 2000 mbar.
- P5 Gauge – Combines piezoresistive and Pirani sensors, extending measurement from atmosphere down to 5x10⁻⁵ mbar for high-vacuum systems.
Both models offer advanced features such as real-time visualization, massive data logging capacity, programmable alarms, and rugged, serviceable designs. Whether you are in the lab, on the bench, or in the field, these gauges make vacuum measurement smarter, faster, and more reliable.
Supporting the Future of Science and Industry
From popular culture to real-world application, cryogenic technology has long been synonymous with the pursuit of what lies beyond our current limits. With the addition of our ECC compressors, E2CH cold heads, and ECP pumps, we are expanding our portfolio to help customers meet the challenges of space simulation, research, and coating applications with confidence. And with the launch of our new P4 and P5 handheld gauges, we are also making vacuum measurement simpler, smarter, and more connected.
While science fiction may still dream of cryosleep pods and interstellar travel, our technology is already helping customers achieve the breakthroughs of today… laying the foundation for the innovations of tomorrow.
