Edwards Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump Maintenance
Let us walk you through the regular maintenance needed for your Edwards Rotary Vane vacuum pump. By completing simple service procedures your vacuum pump will have a higher performance and extended lifetime.
On this page we will guide you through how to remove and reassemble the oil sight glass, side panel, motor, oil casing and cartridge of your Rotary Vane vacuum pump.
Before you begin
Before beginning service on any vacuum pump, please switch the pump off and leave it to cool for a minimum of one hour. This ensures that the pumps is at a safe temperature to handle.

Step-by-step guide:
Step One: Rotary Vane pump disassembly for minor maintenance
Part one: oil drain
First remove the two plugs from the top and the one from the side of the pump.
Next, the oil can be drained. Make sure that the oil is completely drained from the pump before moving on to the next service step.
Part two: Oil sight glass and side panel disassembly
Unscrew the bolts to disassemble and remove the oil sight glass.
Now remove the side panel by unscrewing the two bolts.
Part three: motor disassembly
First unscrew the bolts at the front of the machine to disassemble and remove the motor.
Next, the coupling element can be removed and discarded.
The bolts can now be unscrewed to remove the fan coupling.
Now the fan coupling and the ducting sheet should be removed.
Part four: Oil casing and cartridge disassembly
- Begin by unscrewing the four bolts to disassemble the base plate. One this is completed, the base plate can be removed.
- Next, unscrew the four bolts to disassemble the oil box.
- Remove the oil box and the gasket. The gasket can be discarded.
- Now unscrew the bolt to disassemble and then remove the reed valve baffle.
- Unscrew the bolts to disassemble the cartridge end plate. Make sure to check it for surface damage. When finished, it can be removed and set aside.
- Next remove the oil pump motor and blade and check the plate for any surface damage.
- Now remove the Oldham’s coupling, LV rotor and the blades.
- Unscrew the bolts to disassemble the LV stator. Once again, check for any surface damage.
- Unscrew the bolts to disassemble the HV stator. It can also be removed from the adaptor.
- Remove and discard the oil gasket.
- Remove the oil pressure valve, dump valve, spring and gas ballast check valve with the spring.
- Next, unscrew the bolt to disassemble the coupling element and remove it.
- Now remove the HV rotor and blades. The blades can be discarded.
- Remove the sleeve.
- Unscrew the two bolts and refit onto the seal carrier. The bolts can be tightened to remove the seal carrier.
- Now use part TDS008017 to help remove the shaft seal.
- The oil gasket and O-ring can now be removed and discarded.
- Now use part TDS010162, and make sure that the tool fits into the casing.
- Finally, remove the shaft seal from the HV stator.
Part five: adaptor disassembly
Begin by removing the mode selector assembly. Unscrew the knob until it stops turning, then push to remove.
Unscrew the four bolts to disassemble the top plate and remove it.
Next the follow parts can be removed in this order: printed gasket, inlet valve, spring and washer.
Finally, using pliers remove and check the air bleed assembly for any surface damage.
Step Two: Rotary Vane pump assembly for minor maintenance
Part six: adaptor disassembly
Lubricate the O-ring with appropriate oil.
Fit the air bleed assembly, and make sure that there is no damage on the part.
Next, fit the spring and washer.
The O-rings can be lubricated, along with the bottom part of the inlet valve, with appropriate oil.
Now fit the inlet valve assembly, the top plate printed gasket and the top plate.
Now tighten the two bolts to secure the top plate with a starting torque of 2 Nm, then tightening with a final 8 Nm torque
The next set of bolts should be tightened in the same way, starting with a 2 Nm torque, and finishing with a 8 Nm torque.
Lubricate the O-ring with appropriate oil, along with the bottom part of the knob and fit them into place.
Now lubricate the O-ring at the bottom of the pump with oil and fit the mode selector assembly.
Part seven: oil casing and cartridge assembly
Begin by lubricating the whole inner and outer diameter of the shaft seal with appropriate oil.
Now press the shaft seal into the HV stator using tool TDS008018.
Lubricate the shaft seal with the appropriate oil.
Next fit the shaft seal and fit into place using tool TDS008017.
Now fit the printed gasket and lubricated O-ring on the HV stator.
Now the fit seal carrier on the HV stator by tightening the screws with a 11 Nm torque.
Now the gas ballast check valve can be inserted into the HV stator, along with the oil pressure valve.
Next, fit a new cartridge printed gasket onto the HV stator.
The HV stator can now be fitted onto the adaptor. Tighten the three screws with a torque of 11 Nm to secure.
Now lubricate the O-ring with appropriate oil and insert it into the rotor shaft.
Next, press fit the sleeve onto the rotor shaft using part TDS008018.
Now, fit the tool TDS016569.
Apply a thin layer of grease around the circumference of the radial shaft seal.
Make sure that the slotted face on the right-sided blade must face the operator, and the left-sided blade should face the opposite direction.
15. Fit the blades to the HV rotor, and then fit the HV rotor into the HV stator.
16. Now remove the tool TDS016569.
17. Next fit the Oldham’s coupling and make sure to lubricate it properly.
18. Fit the LV stator into the HV stator by tightening the two screws with a torque of 11 Nm.
19. Make sure that the slotted faces of the blades are properly aligned. The right sided blade should be facing the operator, and the left sided must be opposite.
20. Fit the blades to the LV rotor and then fit the assembly to the LV stator after proper lubrication.
21. The Oldham’s coupling can be fitted next, with proper lubrication.
22 .Now fit the oil pump stator into the LV stator.
23 .the oil pump stator and the LV stator can now also be fitted.
24. Using the screws attach the end plate back onto the vacuum pump, with a torque of 11 Nm.
25.Next, fit the reed valve and the reed valve clamp, with a torque of 8 Nm.
26. The reed valve baffle box can be fitted next with a torque of 8 Nm.
27. Fit the oil box printed gasket and the oil box. The screws should be tightened with a torque of 12 Nm.
28. Now fit the exhaust adaptor assembly.
29. Next the lubricated O-ring and then the oil drain plug, and oil filler plugs can be fitted.
30. Place the oil sight glass and bezel and tighten the screws with a 12 Nm torque to secure.
31. Fit the coupling on the shaft and secure it with a screw.
32. Now place the pump baseplate and tighten the four bolts with a 11 Nm torque to secure.
Part eight: motor assembly
- Begin by fitting the fan coupling and the ducting sheet.
- Tighten the bolt with a torque of 11 Nm to secure.
- Now fit the coupling element.
Part nine: motor and side panel assembly
Fit the motor onto the pump and tighten the bolts with a torque of 11 Nm to secure.
Using tool TDS016575 to help, tighten the screws on the coupling hub with a 11 Nm torque.
Next fit the side panel by tightening the bolts with a 1.5 Nm torque.
Now the oil filler plugs and O-rings can be removed.
Finally, fill up the oil to the maximum level and refit the oil filler plugs.
Now you have completed Rotary Vane maintenance on your Edwards pump! Remember to dispose of any unneeded parts or materials in accordance with your local environmental regulations, and to store your tools in a safe location, ready for the next maintenance procedure.
