Dry Scroll vacuum pump tip seal replacement

Regular maintenance is key to keeping your vacuum pump performing well. Edwards vacuum pumps are designed for easy service. On this page, we will guide you through how to replace the tip seal on your Edwards Mini Scroll mXDS3 dry vacuum pump. We will go over the disassembly, removal, replacement, and reassembly of the vacuum pump for the purpose of a tip seal replacement. 

Before you begin vacuum pump repair

Before you begin working on your vacuum pump, always remember to disconnect it from the power source and to wait until it has cooled in temperature. This usually takes around 1 hour.

3.  T20-25 screwdriver
4.  Plast tip seal removal tool
5.  Allen key set

Step One: how to disassemble a scroll pump

Part one: fan cover disassembly

1. To disassemble the fan cover, simply unscrew the bolt and remove the cover. 

Part two: end cover and end plate disassembly

1. To begin, unscrew the bolts to disassemble and remove the end cover.

2. Unscrew the bolts to disassemble and remove the cover plate.

3. Remove the fan. 

4. Next, hold the shaft using slip join pliers to prevent it from spinning while disassembling the screw.

5. Lastly, the counterbalance can be disassembled. 

Step two: how to remove the orbit scroll tip seal

Part one: orbit scroll removal

1. Place the fan cover back in its position

2. Now remove the orbit scroll and anti-rotation assembly

Part two: orbit scroll seal removal

1. To remove the orbit scroll carefully remove the face seal. Be sure not to damage the surface. 

Part three: orbit scroll tip seal removal

1.  Use a soft tool to prevent any scratches while removing the orbit scroll tip seal.

2. Next, be sure to clean the orbit scroll with isopropanol and a lint free cloth.

Step three: how to replace the tip seal in a scroll pump

Part one: orbit scroll seal replacement

1.  Begin by assembling the face seal. Make sure that it is fully centered when doing so.

2.  Next, just press the face seal into position, applying pressure to the inner diameter. 

Part two: orbit scroll tip seal replacement

1. Clean the bur at the starting tip of the tip seal, starting with the end that is near the center.

2. Now cut the extra tip seal 5mm before the end. 

Part three: fixed scroll tip seal replacement

Make sure to use a plastic tip seal removal tool, and to clean the fixed scroll with isopropanol and a lint free cloth.

1. Cut the tip seal into two pieces. One 239mm +/- 0.1mm, and the other 1605mm +/- 0.1mm.

2. Start from the short end of the tip seal, and guide the seal into place.

3. Cut the extra tip seal 5mm before the end, for both pieces.

Step four: how to assemble a scroll pump

Part one: orbit scroll assembly

1.  Assemble the orbit scroll and the anti-rotation assembly.

2. When tightening, make sure to use a torque setting of 2.5 Nm. 

Part two: end cover and end plate assembly

1.  Begin by assembling the counterbalance.

2.  Hold the shaft with slip joint pliers to prevent it from spinning while disassembling the screw, with a torque setting of 4.5 Nm.

3.  Next assemble the O-ring, and the end plate, with a torque setting of 2.5 Nm.

4.  Lastly, the O-ring and the end over can be added, with a torque setting of 2.5 Nm. 

Part three: fan cover assembly

1.  Assemble the fan.

2. The correct position o the fan can be found using vernier callipers.

3.  The distance between the shaft surface and the fan surface is 2mm +/- 0.4mm.

4.  Assemble the fan cover, with a torque setting of 2.5 Nm. 

The tip seal replacement is now complete. Make sure to dispose of broken, old or unneeded materials and parts responsibly, as per your local regulations.
