Practical Vacuum Technology

3-Day Course

This course develops an understanding of the operating principles, characteristics, advantages and limitations of some of the vacuum products in the marketplace.

Applications for vacuum systems are looked at and a wide range of vacuum systems are examined. The subject is treated from its foundations and includes theoretical and practical sessions on vacuum units; the operation, performance, characteristics and usage of vacuum gauges, vacuum pumps and leak detection equipment. Demonstrations of several physical phenomena are given and a breadth of equipment is shown and discussed. Practical exercises using small vacuum systems and a leak detector are included.

Pump Maintenance Training

The overall aim of this course is to provide training to enable attendees to competently operate, maintain, repair and fault find vacuum systems based on rotary pumps & diffusion pumps. Routine maintenance of boosters is also discussed. The 3-day option only covers rotary pumps.

Information is presented in a simple, non-academic manner and covers, in addition to the explanation of the mechanism & construction of the pumps, common problems with the design of vacuum systems, trouble shooting vacuum systems, leak detection and gauge options. Practical work forms a major part of the course. All students are expected to dismantle, assemble and test vacuum equipment.

On-site Training

There are a number of ½ day or 1 day “off the shelf” courses that may be appropriate for your requirements as an alternative to bespoke training including.

Gases Awareness (1/2 day) – This course provides an appreciation of the properties & hazards of different classifications of gases and instruction on safe methods of cylinder handling and use of gas delivery equipment.

Good Vacuum Practice (1 day) – This course is an abridged version of the 3 day Practical Vacuum Technology and provides an understanding of the importance of good system design and cleanliness in vacuum systems.

Practical Leak Detection (1 day) – This course covers a variety of leak detection methods with particular reference to Mass Spectrometer Leak Detectors. It establishes correct procedures for leak test applications and the operation of the MSLD.

Vacuum System Design (1 day) – For anyone needing to specify components for vacuum systems, this course provides an understanding of the theory and terminology used in system design. Participants will gain an appreciation of design calculations and the information required to process them.

These courses may be organized for a minimum of 4 attendees and delivered at our training centre in Crawley or onsite.
