A Brief History of Edwards

1919 F.D. Edwards begins importing vacuum equipment, establishes Edwards Equipment and Services business based in south London.

1939 F.D. Edwards begins manufacturing vacuum equipment

1953 Edwards moves to new head office and factory in Crawley, Sussex, UK

1954 Edwards High Vacuum Limited (‘Edwards’) formed.

1955 Acquisition of Alto Vuoto SpA, a freeze drying manufacturer in Italy

1958 Acquisition of J H Holmes and Son Ltd., a major manufacturing subcontract machining operation of Shoreham, Sussex UK and now the base of primary and dry pump manufacturing operations.

1968 Edwards acquired by BOC, Edwards having stayed in private hands through the post-war period until the 60s when it went public.

1971 Nissan Edwards Shinku joint venture established in Japan.

1977 Acquisition of Kneise Apparatbau GmbH, a freeze drying manufacturer in Germany.

1984 Edwards patents the Drystar dry (oil-free) vacuum pump, launch of the dry claw pump into the semiconductor market.

1988 Distribution agreement created with Seiko Seiki Ltd., a Japanese manufacturer of magnetically suspended turbomolecular pumps.

1992 Acquisition of Plasma Products from Electrotech Ltd., a start-up company focused on developing semiconductor exhaust gas management and scrubbing systems.

1992 Songwon Edwards established as a joint venture in South Korea.

1995 Acquisition of Calumatic BV, a filling and handling systems manufacturer in The Netherlands.

1997 Edwards acquires Systems Chemistry, manufacturer of chemical management systems. 

1997 BOC Edwards formed with the integration of Edwards vacuum business with BOC electronic gases business to serve the semiconductor industry. 

1999 Acquisition of the chemical management division of FSI International.

2000 Acquisition of Kachina Semiconductor Services, a tool component cleaning business.

2001 Acquisition of the vacuum and pressure business from Smiths Group, which includes Stokes Vacuum, Hick Hargreaves and Hibon. Acquisition of the turbomolecular pump business from Seiko Instruments Inc.

2002 Acquisition of Semco, a chemical dispense business. Acquisition of Hydromatix, a liquid abatement business.

2006 The BOC Group is acquired by Linde AG and together form The Linde Group. BOC Edwards sells the Hibon pressure business to Ingersoll Rand.

2007 Edwards acquired by CCMP

2007 Launches new www.edwardsvacuum.com

2008: Edwards Announces iXH NEXT-Generation Vacuum Pump

2009: nEXT released

2010: Edwards first screw pump the GXS is released

2011:  New manufacturing facility in Lutin,CZ opens

2011:  New C3 manufacturing facility opens in Korea

2012: Edwards Group Limited lists its shares on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the symbol 'EVAC' 

2014: Atlas Copco Group (NASDAQ OMX Stockholm: ATCO A, ATCO B), a Sweden-based provider of industrial productivity solutions, closes its acquisition of Edwards Group LTD. Edwards is now part of Atlas Copco’s new Vacuum Solutions division in the Compressor Technique business area.
